In Kochi, the government was directed by the state human rights commission to provide a compensation of Rs 25,000 to a complainant named Sojish from Nettoor. The additional chief secretary of the home department issued an order stating that the compensation should be deducted from the salary of the former SI of Panangad in three equal installments. The chairman of the commission, Justice JB Kosi, had mandated the compensation. Sojish, a member of a scheduled caste, was physically assaulted by the former Panangad SI named Vipin AB. The complaint stated that a police team under the former SI's command took Sojish into custody without authorization while he was receiving medical treatment at a hospital. Sojish subsequently filed a complaint with the commission, which resulted in a directive to file a case against the SI and provide compensation. Despite a disciplinary review leading to a reprimand for the SI, no compensation had been paid. The government noted that the SI was given an opportunity to present a defense before the final order was issued by the commission, but he did not do so. Therefore, the government ordered the payment of Rs 25,000 to the complainant Sojish.
